The Battle of the Boom

ree

As a passionate DJ, I truly enjoy my craft, even in venues that may not be ideally suited for it. I collaborate with three DJ agencies that provide me with a steady stream of gigs each month, in addition to my own bookings through my website and Instagram. One agency, in particular, has been sending me to a new bar approximately two hours away. The compensation is reasonable, making it a manageable commitment.

The venue itself is excellent, and the staff genuinely appreciate my sets. Their positive reactions boost my confidence, and I believe my experience since 1999 has equipped me with the necessary skills. However, I have observed some challenges that may be affecting the overall experience.

Audience Engagement

The clientele at this venue primarily come to play games and enjoy cocktails, often leaving after a short period. While I strive to engage with guests through song requests and birthday shout-outs, the transient nature of the crowd creates a unique dynamic. I typically start strong, taking over from the previous DJ, and I notice that groups are initially enthusiastic, often comin

g over to dance. My ability to read the room and adapt to the audience's energy has been a valuable skill in my career.

Sound Quality Issues

One significant concern at this venue is the sound quality. Several patrons have approached me during my sets to request louder music, but I must explain that the bar staff controls the volume limit, which is further restricted by a sound limiter. This issue is particularly pronounced at 1 AM when the volume is automatically decreased, making it challenging to create an engaging atmosphere. I often find myself relying on my headphones to gauge the sound, as the DJ area lacks adequate volume. Interestingly, when I step away, other areas of the venue seem to have a more suitable sound level, albeit still not loud enough to encourage guests to stay and enjoy the music.

Guest Retention Challenges

Despite the venue attracting between 500 and 1,000 guests throughout the day, I find myself in a unique position after each gig. While the security staff often express their appreciation for my performances, I feel somewhat deflated upon realizing that many attendees are not there primarily for the music. My efforts to maintain energy and engagement can be challenging, especially when the audience shifts every couple of hours. This dynamic raises the question of how to balance energy levels and song selection for a new group of guests.

Positive Connections

On a positive note, I have recognized that the individuals who choose to sit close to my DJ setup are often more engaged. I have started to actively connect with them, fostering friendships and potential future opportunities.

In conclusion, while I appreciate the regular gig, I must rate it three stars. The sound quality alone could warrant a two-star deduction, and I will also deduct one star for the difficulty in retaining guests. Overall, I remain hopeful for the potential of this venue and look forward to future experiences that may enhance my performances.
